Winter is Approaching Fast.
This is a short time of reasonable calm in beekeeping. Most of the time spent will be on planning and evaluation.
Colonies are generally substantially smaller and management is limited to warmer daytime temperatures. Physical inspections are limited in duration and tied to daytime temps in the 60's.
Weather conditions on the South Carolina Coastal Plain are not normally harsh. Night temps during November and December rarely drop into the low 20’s. Daytime temps will be in the low 50’s. There will be days when the temps are in the lower to mid 60's. There will be some bee activity during the day when temps are in the mid 40’s.
The colonies will be clustering to keep the brood chamber warm on cold days. Temps next to the developing larvae must be 93F degrees The queen will be laying much less until and will only increase laying after the December 22. 2024 when the daylight levels begin to increase.
No flowers...no honey at this time.
Beekeepers are focused on 2026 needs, evaluating the issues faced in 2025, repairing woodenware, securing tools and treatment materials.
